An intimate documentary performance around a table
about a queer couple, travelling through
its family histories, to write its own story.

The piece exists in four versions with different main languages:
English, German or Spanish as well as English with Italian
All versions are multi-language with parts as well in German, English and/or Spanish, but do not need to be understood to follow the piece.

Description
In about three years, in the middle of the 18th century, more than 30.000 people from the German territories made the flight to the shores of the Volga. They were escaping war, hunger and persecution. But the promised land was not what they had hoped for.

We sit at the table with the queer Argentinian-German stage directors couple Vöcks de Schwindt. We lean over maps, photos, documents and a songbook. Maté tea is served. Together we travel across borders and continents along the migration history of their families. We follow the trail of the Volga Germans, who left the German region of Hesse in the 18th century to emigrate to Russia and continued their path to South America 100 years later.

In a continuously shifting narrative, the couple deconstructs nationalist myths and contradictions in family identity, searches for a queer heritage and encounters ancestors who can only be who they want to be when they are not in the place where they believe they belong.

In weniger als drei Jahren ergriffen Mitte des 18. Jahrhunderts mehr als 30.000 Menschen aus deutschen Territorien die Flucht an die Ufer der Wolga. Sie flohen vor Krieg, Hunger und Verfolgung. Doch das gelobte Land war alles andere als erwartet.

In On the first night we looked at maps sitzt das Publikum mit dem queeren argentinisch-deutschen Künstlerpaar Vöcks de Schwindt am Tisch. Über Landkarten, Fotos, Dokumente und ein Gesangbuch gebeugt. Mate-Tee wird gereicht. Gemeinsam reisen sie über Grenzen und Kontinente hinweg durch ihre Familien- und Migrationsgeschichte: Den Fährten der Wolgadeutschen folgend, die im 18. Jahrhundert aus dem Hessischen nach Russland auswanderten und 100 Jahre später ihren Weg auf dem südamerikanischen Kontinent fortführten.

Im fluiden Erzählfluss dekonstruiert das Paar nationalistische Narrative und Widersprüche familiärer Identität, sucht nach einem queeren Erbe und begegnet Vorfahren, die nur sein können, was sie sein wollen, wenn sie nicht an dem Ort sind, an den sie zu gehören glauben.
